The city got its start as a pig farm supplying the pork to Camp Hood. From these humble beginnings, the city has grown to its present population of more than 18,000. The city boasts that it is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas.

Harker Heights is part of the Killeen Independent School District and have some of the best elementary and middle schools in the district.
