| Gatesville
is located north of the Fort Hood Military Reservation at the junction of
U.S. Highway 84 and State 36. It is the county seat of Coryell County,
with an approximate population of 11,500.

| There are community centers, a city auditorium and three
city parks: Raby, Faunt Le Roy and Brown. The city maintains a public
swimming pool in the park. Faunt Le Roy, located on the river, provides
physical fitness equipment, a volleyball court, excellent restroom
facilities, grills, picnic tables and camping hookups.
Annual events in Gatesville
include: the Coryell County Youth Fair and Livestock show, Wildcat Antique
Show & Sale, the Riding Club Rodeo, Shivaree, Leon Fun Run, Harvest
Fest, Holiday Tour of Homes, and Christmas Parade.
The Coryell Memorial Hospital
was constructed in 1976, at an initial cost of $4 million, with a 55 bed
capacity. In addition to the hospital, there are 10 doctors, including a
surgeon and a radiologist, one part time optometrist, one ophthalmologist,
two dentists and one veterinary clinic.
Gatesville has chosen the
council-manager form of government with a mayor and six councilmen. Fire
protection is provided by 36 volunteers operating five pumpers. There is
an eight-man police force with five radio-equipped cars. Refuse pickup is
provided to businesses daily and to residential areas twice weekly. There
is a city-county airport at Gatesville with a 3,400 foot paved runway.
Fuel service for planes is available. Use of the airport is free. Anyone
may land and park on the facility at no charge.
